IGF 2010 Main Competition Announces Finalists

Earlier this evening, the finalists for the Main Competition were announced for the fast approaching Independent Games Festival 2010.

Notables include Joe Danger which is up for both the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and Technical Excellence, Super Meat Boy is also up for the Grand Prize along with Excellence in Audio, and AAAAA! A Reckless Disregard for Gravity is up for Excellence in Design.

[Preview] Super Meat Boy

Some of you might have played a flash game on Newgrounds called Meat Boy. For those who haven’t, it’s about a glob of meat whose girlfriend is kidnapped by an evil fetus with a PhD. The fetus’s only defenses against Meat Boy are his ability to teleport and his henchmen, the evil level designers.

Super Meat Boy Challenges Moms, Induces Labor

Edmund McMillen recently allowed his mother and sister to play a top-secret beta version of Super Meat Boy.  Footage of the event was smuggled out of a high-security facility, and made public at 11:43 pm today.

In the following video, Mr. McMillen’s mother can be heard claiming that, to play the game,  “you have to press the button on your left side; you gotta press the button on your right side. Then, you jump, jump jump.”

We can only hope this is an exaggeration, as Super Meat Boy’s sales would surely be damaged by such an unintuitive and challenging control scheme.
