Wow, how’s that for an alliterative title? Anyway, you may not be old enough to remember the first Final Fantasy game for the NES when it came out in Japan in the end of 1987 and the United States in May of 1990. Its sales both here and in Japan single-handedly saved Squaresoft from going bankrupt. Now, after over 20 years, 13 (well, soon to be 14) main titles, and numerous spin-offs, the curtain may finally close on the franchise.

Well, there’s a silver lining to this Cloud (pun intended!). Square Enix has constantly said no to a FFVII remake, and while they haven’t exactly fully amended this announcement, truly literal people like me can take away a slight glimmer of hope in their latest statement.

Happy New Year, folks! It’s 2010, and with the new year come new possibilities. Despite the dismal end capped by last month’s abysmal sales, this year is poised to bring new hope to gaming companies and gamers alike. In a public message, Square Enix President Yoichi Wada called 2010 “The Year of Taking Root” and spoke of reorganization and a growing convergence between video games and other types of digital entertainment. His full message can be found below, and if all he talks about comes to pass, Square Enix is in for a great year.

So, I was humping the screen while looking at Final Fantasy XIV information the other day, when I happened across the races. And my, what a selection! There’s the human-like Hyur, the large, tough, hairy Roegadyn, the small and cute, but highly intelligent Taruta–ahem, I meant Lalafell. Waitaminute…these all look so familiar!

If you play any of today’s video games, chances are you’ve seen, if not purchased, some downloadable content. In fact, you may have played a game that felt woefully incomplete without said downloadable content. For better or worse, the trend is only going to increase. Before you click on the break, take a guess at how much money the Call of Duty franchise is expected to make on DLC alone next year.

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to interview Stephanie Sheh, a talented actress and producer in anime and video games. Her resume is extensive, and her video game credits include Odin Sphere, Tales of the Abyss, Suikoden V, and Resident Evil (she’s the current voice of Rebecca Chambers).
She’s also both produced and lent her voice to the popular anime series FLCL (Fooly Cooly), and her anime credits include Naruto, Bleach, Lucky Star, and Blood+. I also got to meet her friend Kei “K.” Yukon, who was nice enough to give her own input on some questions as well. They both even had some advice for those of us interested in voice-acting.

Remember way back in March when I claimed to be a dirty, dirty Final Fantasy whore? Well, apparently I am, because I bought My Life as a Darklord, despite being so broke that I can’t even afford to pay attention. And let me tell you, that game’s goodness was a sweet, delicious nectar that left me thirsting for more. So, when I beat it, I was all too eager to splurge on the additional chapter. And that’s where things turned sour.

You’ll notice that this post is a mere two days after my last one, which is probably some kind of record for me. Rest assured that this is due to my dedication as a gaming journalist, and not at all because Chris and Joanna have kidnapped my family due to my last post (I love you, Mom!). Because they didn’t. Honest. Anyway, Squenix proved once again that I am a dirty, dirty Final Fantasy whore.
