With tens of thousands of apps and a constant influx of new titles, it would be an understatement to say that Apple’s App Store has become somewhat of a competitive market. Secret Exit, despite making some of the best mobile games around, isn’t immune to the challenges selling an iPhone game today presents. Or, perhaps it was a case of inflated expectations, brought about by a string of critically acclaimed hits, including Spin and Zen Bound.
Whatever the reason, upon releasing Stair Dismount, their latest iPhone game, Secret Exit was confronted with some unexpected criticism. Several early reviews claimed the game had too little content, or that it was more of a toy. Being about a game on the App Store, these opinions strike me as nothing if not ironic, especially considering Stair Dismount’s high quality compared to other iPhone titles.
Wanting to get the official take on it, we interviewed Jani Kahrama of Secret Exit and got some hands-on time with the game in question.

Not long after our interview with Hermann Peterscheck, the Lead Producer of JumpGate Evolution, we found out that he was leaving the company. While we had plenty of questions about that, we were also unsure of what to do with the interview we’d just finished. Should we go ahead and run it? Toss it in the trash?
In the end, we decided to post it, but not because it was informative. Sadly, quite the opposite.

Amazing news folks, Gaming Dead recently had the opportunity to pull away Chris Park–head honcho of Arcen Games–from his work long enough to pick his brain on a few topics. Even better, he was kind enough to provide plenty to snack on, including new info on his ever evolving space strategy game AI War: Fleet Command, its upcoming expansion The Zenith Remnant, and a pair of new games the developer is working on for 2010.
For those who don’t know, Park has created an indie RTS game that brings many times the amount of content than that of several retail titles combined. The game has been given a free monthly DLC update since it launched earlier this year, and the dev has no plans to stop that pattern anytime soon. The philosophy Park brings to game development is a fresh one, and one I’d love to see more in his line of work adopt. Read about it and a bunch more in the monster interview after the break.

Today’s interview is with audio extraordinaire Rob King, whose credits on over 100 games include such titles as Quantum of Solace, Fable 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, the entire Heroes of Might and Magic series and countless others. And that’s not counting his film credits, which include promo trailers for I Am Legend, Watchmen, and 300 as well as music for the 2006 Oscars. He’s currently hard at work on the audio for the upcoming MMORPG Heroes of Telara. More about Mr. King can be found at his website, Green Street Studios. His interview was both enlightening and incredibly interesting, and I’m definitely keeping an eye out for his new titles, including Heroes of Telara.

A while back I did a little review of a game called Gobtron. Seeing how awesome my review was, the creators of Gobtron, Juicy Beast, were more than delighted to give me a one-on-one personal interview. We sat down to some delicious brownies and ice tea in my beautiful enclosed garden, and this is the conversation that followed:

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to interview Stephanie Sheh, a talented actress and producer in anime and video games. Her resume is extensive, and her video game credits include Odin Sphere, Tales of the Abyss, Suikoden V, and Resident Evil (she’s the current voice of Rebecca Chambers).
She’s also both produced and lent her voice to the popular anime series FLCL (Fooly Cooly), and her anime credits include Naruto, Bleach, Lucky Star, and Blood+. I also got to meet her friend Kei “K.” Yukon, who was nice enough to give her own input on some questions as well. They both even had some advice for those of us interested in voice-acting.

Remember that one-man-army behind The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, James Silva? You should, we’ve interviewed him before. Well now he’s back with an Xbox Live Indie Game called I MAED A GAM3 W1TH ZoMB1ES!!!1. It’s tons of fun and has one of the most kick-ass video game songs I’ve ever heard. And, as the theme song mentions, it’s only a dollar.

A few months ago we came across a surprising little iPhone game by the name of Spider. In it, you use your eight-legged-platforming-prowess to scale walls, spin webs, snack on bugs – y’know, the usual bad-ass spider stuff. I got a chance to talk with David Kalina, Co-Owner and Lead Programmer at Tiger Style Games and an industry veteran (Splinter Cell, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Thief), about Spider and why he made the jump from big-budget studios to indie games.

There are a few names that every fan of the Final Fantasy series of games knows: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshitaka Amano, Nobuo Uematsu…Monty Oum.
Oum may not be listed during the credits of any of the Final Fantasy games out there…yet. But having created five successful fan videos pitting characters from the Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive franchises against one another, in a series known as Dead Fantasy, Oum is now a household name for gamers in those fandoms. We caught up with him at the Artists’ Alley at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CA.

If you haven’t heard of Edge of Twilight yet, here’s the skinny: The game came virtually out of nowhere this past E3, and quickly made a strong case for its inclusion in my must-buy games list with a single, awesome pair of trailers.
Being unable to find any interviews or information on the game released later than 2008, I contacted Fuzzyeyes myself and demanded (begged) they answer all my questions. Fortunately Wei-Yao Lu, the studio’s Managing Director and all-around swell guy, obliged.
