Final Fantasy Archive

When I first tried watching Final Fantasy XIII, I discovered the disk wouldn’t read in my DVD player. After some fiddling, I managed to get it to work on my Xbox 360, though just barely. For some reason, the movie kept skipping whenever the camera got directly behind one of the characters. I was eventually able to get the movie to play smoothly provided I was holding the left analog stick forward and mashing the A button. I asked my friends about it and most of them seemed to be experiencing similar problems, but one of my friends, who had been a fan of the series for some time, seemed to think this was an intentional part of the design, not unlike the video games I’ve been reviewing.

Wow, how’s that for an alliterative title? Anyway, you may not be old enough to remember the first Final Fantasy game for the NES when it came out in Japan in the end of 1987 and the United States in May of 1990. Its sales both here and in Japan single-handedly saved Squaresoft from going bankrupt. Now, after over 20 years, 13 (well, soon to be 14) main titles, and numerous spin-offs, the curtain may finally close on the franchise.

Well, there’s a silver lining to this Cloud (pun intended!). Square Enix has constantly said no to a FFVII remake, and while they haven’t exactly fully amended this announcement, truly literal people like me can take away a slight glimmer of hope in their latest statement.

So, I was humping the screen while looking at Final Fantasy XIV information the other day, when I happened across the races. And my, what a selection! There’s the human-like Hyur, the large, tough, hairy Roegadyn, the small and cute, but highly intelligent Taruta–ahem, I meant Lalafell. Waitaminute…these all look so familiar!

I know what you like. You like video game music. You listen to it when you think no one is watching. I also happen to know that not only do you like video game music, you like it when it is remixed and set to an awesome rap.
Well Merry Christgiving! I got a dandy for ya. Read more »

Remember way back in March when I claimed to be a dirty, dirty Final Fantasy whore? Well, apparently I am, because I bought My Life as a Darklord, despite being so broke that I can’t even afford to pay attention. And let me tell you, that game’s goodness was a sweet, delicious nectar that left me thirsting for more. So, when I beat it, I was all too eager to splurge on the additional chapter. And that’s where things turned sour.

Pardon the delay, but I’ve got interviews, pics, and more to sort out, so the AX stuff will be released in installments. Think Xenosaga. Pictured above is the Atlus booth at the Exhibit Hall, and that’s just the start. Here come some more!

There are a few names that every fan of the Final Fantasy series of games knows: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshitaka Amano, Nobuo Uematsu…Monty Oum.
Oum may not be listed during the credits of any of the Final Fantasy games out there…yet. But having created five successful fan videos pitting characters from the Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive franchises against one another, in a series known as Dead Fantasy, Oum is now a household name for gamers in those fandoms. We caught up with him at the Artists’ Alley at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CA.

So, do you like Mario? What about Link? Tony Hawk? I hope the answer to all is “a lot,” because you’re going to be stuck with them for a while.
