Everquest, the hugely popular MMORPG, is being re-imagined by popular electronics retailer and video game console creator Sony, which can be a blessing or a curse depending on how Sony decides to handle the IP. Star Wars: The Old Republic has come under a lot of scrutiny for its ability to gouge money out of loyal fans and lack of content after beating the main quest.
From what current in-game footage tells us, however, the game looks pretty awesome! Environments are fully destructible, which may make moving around environments a little easier, depending on your class. It does add an extra layer to gameplay, I think, as larger characters would be able to completely destroy parts of the world in order to trap enemies or other players during battles or PvP fights. That actually seems like a pretty interesting dynamic.
Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has recently partnered with the Wikia community in order to build and engage a fan base with updates, rewards, and other goodies in a new forum called “The Lab”.
“At SOE, we’re always looking for ways to empower our players and deliver new opportunities that allow them to engage with our games and each other in a meaningful way,” said Laura Naviaux, Senior Vice President of Global Sales & Marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. “As the first game company to partner with Wikia to create a Wikia Official Community, we believe in supporting player communities and see community collaboration as a key pillar in how we’re moving forward as a company. Wikia joined us at this year’s SOE Live event with the debut of The Lab so our players were the first to learn how to best take advantage of the Wikia platform and player community.”
Sony wants to be true to their audience, and all their marketing techniques are now focused on creating an experience for a great fan base. They’re making games for gamers who want to be a part of a growing experience. I hope the trend continues in this direction. Who else would appreciate video game design and narrative than… you know… actual gamers?!
