Super Mario Brothers is one of the most iconic classic video games. Portal is one of the most iconic modern video games. What would happen if someone crammed those two together? Double iconic-ness, of course.
It’s hard to imagine another combination of game concepts that would go together so well, and in such an ingeniously simple way. In the Mario Bros. games you jump on things in order to get to the end of a level. In Portal you jump on things, and through portals, in order to get to the end of a level. Just give Mario a portal gun and -bam!-, the old and the new are one.
MariO was created by the indie developer Stabyourself.
How the game is described on the Stabyourself site:
A complete from scratch recreation of Super Mario Bros. with a focus on perfectly imitating the feel the 1985 classic gave us. Then give Mario a portal gun, add puzzle game mechanics from Portal and there you go. And if that wasn’t crazy enough, play 4-player coop, with everyone having their own Portal gun!
The game comes with different map packs, so you can actually play through the original Super Mario Bros. with the portal gun, or play through new custom maps which take more inspiration from the Portal games. A map editor is also included, so you can even make your own puzzle levels.
MariO is available on Windows, Linux, and OSX. You can download all three versions for free at Stabyourself.net.Tags: indie, mari0, Platformer, Portal, retro, stabyourself, Super Mario Bros.
