BioWare announced at GDC the first paid DLC coming to Mass Effect 2. It is coming next month and will add a new member to Shepard’s team. Warning: Post may contain minor spoilers.
The DLC is called Kasumi’s Stolen Memory and, as you might have guessed, Kasumi is the name of the dark lady that you can have join your crew. Kasumi is a badass thief and she comes with a new special ability, Shade Strike. She will also interact with other characters from the game.
Kasumi’s Stolen Memory sounds to be an interesting change of pace compared to the other missions that shipped with the game. It is said to be reminiscent of a James Bond film. You’ll go undercover to a fancy-dress party and even break into a vault. Inside the vault will be some very famous sculptures from Earth, including the Statue of Liberty. BioWare’s Casey Hudson says it’s a tease to what has happened to Earth in the Mass Effect 2 universe. “At some point we will go to Earth,” Hudson said, but didn’t reveal when. Hopefully we won’t have to wait for Mass Effect 3 to see it.
But what I’m really thinking is, THAT MUST BE A REALLY HUGE FUCKING VAULT.
The DLC should run about 90 minutes and comes with more than just a new character. Players will get a new weapon, a submachine gun, and the ability to stun enemies with a flashbang grenade. A new section of the Normandy will also be available, where Kasumi will set up shop. For some reason, though, the DLC only comes with one new achievement. I’m assuming it will be unlocked by completing the mission.
Another interesting thing revealed is that, though Kasumi’s Stolen Memory doesn’t do anything new with the Mass Effect 2 engine, it opens the door for BioWare to try some different things with it in other DLC. And that other DLC is currently in the works, Hudson said.
Kasumi’s Stolen Memory will be available on both PC and Xbox 360 in April, but there is no word out yet on the price. Once purchased, players will be able to access the new content either during the middle of the game (after getting the Normandy), or after beating it.
