[Rant] Twilight MMO in Development
| Adam Bruno |

Let me start by saying that I love vampires. Vampires are awesome. I, like many other vampire lovers, have often wondered (dare I say fantasized) what it would be like to be a vampire. I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Blade, Underworld, and pretty much any vampire fiction you can think of. Except Twilight. I fucking hate Twilight. And now they’re getting an MMO.
Why are they getting an MMO? More importantly, why are they getting an MMO that’s being developed by hardcore (but skilled!) fans for free?
Because Stephenie Meyer made a deal with the devil. That has to be it. And since I am already damned to a fiery eternity for myriad reasons which are not the focus of this article, I remain immune to the infernal power with which her books have been imbued. For if you enjoy Twilight, there may yet be a circle of hell currently being constructed just for you.
I have not read the books. I will not read the books. I have seen about five minutes of the first movie, and even before I realized it was Twilight, I was retching. I may yet try to stomach the books just to see if they are better than the movies, but I don’t think my gag reflex can take it. But apparently, there are some people who love them enough to not only dream of an MMO, but to make it themselves at no cost. And there are fans who are actually looking forward to it.
I need to stop writing this before I get an aneurysm. Because I’m sure my own personal hell will now include emo-goth vampires whose range of facial expressions only includes “constipated.”

God dammit I am truly furious at this news. Not simply because it is Twilight, but also because it is the first of its kind: a proper vampire MMO.I long ago dreamed of an Anne Rice MMO full of dialogue and story; in contrast to this I also desired a Lost Boys MMO full of grit and societal reference. However I am left in shock as this mockery presents itself. Especially since Twilight is the equivalent of Days of Our Lives plus vampires.
In addition to this I am irritated at the inherent problems this game may introduce. As Twilight is essentially Days of Our Lives plus vampires what will players be required to do? Will they fight with other vampire clans and against the werewolves? If so, this game automatically tracts away from the very source material it represents. You know what I’m talking about; the inherent drama of being a Vampire interacting with humans. The whole walking amongst a sea of fruit pies thing.
But that’s the problem with Twilight it is inconsistent in its uses of vampires as characters and largely uses the trait of vampirism as a plot device. For example; in Twilight the vampires are invulnerable to sunlight, cannot be affected by psychosomatic objects (crucifix, garlic, etc.), and can even live normal lives (plus superpowers). The only thing real “vampire” thing in Twilight is the thirst for blood, however it doesn’t even need to HUMAN blood. That’s the problem with Twilight, human blood is the equivalent of cigarettes.
So where is the drama of being a vampire? In fact where is the vampire for that matter? Once you take away the essential traits what do you have left? A shiny immortal being that is brooding and only needs to have blood sometimes, like some kind of lame hipster junkie?
But to be honest, I think the Twilight MMO will probably implode. Between the hardcore players that want to raid bosses and collect everything and the role players that want to live second lives inside the game. The inconsistencies within Twilight will likely destroy itself and make life difficult and annoying for everybody.

I actually took the time to read the crap that was written on that website. First, it’s not an “MMO”, but may as well be – it’s inserting your own character into the Twilight world, and a chance of online interaction with other players. The online element is downplayed. But, of course, still annoying.
Thank god that they don’t have a license for it yet. And probably will never get one. This is a terrible idea and should be burned in eternal flame.

No, it’s an MMO. It’s just not an MMORPG. At least, not really. And I will never forgive you for telling me about this.

So its basically Twilight + the Sims. I am disappoint.

They’re also trying to say it’s NOT an MMO, despite the description that they DO bother to put up on the website matches what an MMO is. Maybe they’re trying to convince themselves that they’re doing something revolutionary and unique, like Stephenie Meyer did when she thought making up a vampire story that sparkled based on something she DREAMED.
Still, as news comes out, I’m curious to find out more. The intersection between gamers and Twihards might be interesting to see.
